Most GPS devices are set up so that you can buy and download/install whatever maps you want. For example, I use a TomTom with a removable memory card. Cracker barrel hours thanksgiving day. Normally, I have the Australian maps on the card, but if I am travelling overseas, I back up the local maps onto my laptop and clear the card, buy the overseas ones from the TomTom website, download them to the laptop and transfer them to the card.

When I get home I simply back up and remove the OS maps and re-install the locals. If you already own a GPS device and are familiar with its controls, features, voice, etc, I'd recommend bringing it with you if you can buy and install Australian maps for it. As you'll be driving in unfamiliar territory on the 'other' side of the road, at least it will be one familiar thing about the trip you won't have to worry about. Thank you for all your replies. Is there a website that you'd recommend picking one up? The Garmin GPS I currently have has North American and European maps on it and is at full capacity.
